A Path to Zero

In accordance with the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) emphasis on reaching zero fatalities on our roadways, the New Orleans Regional Planning Commission (NORPC) in partnership with the governments of St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, and Tangipahoa Parishes is developing a safety action plan as a part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All Program (SS4A). The recommendations of the NORPC Path to Zero Safety Action Plan will allow the associated parishes to pursue SS4A implementation funds and other applicable funding sources to implement the infrastructural countermeasures and related programmatic recommendations.

Vision Zero and the Safe System Approach

Vision Zero is a goal to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all by implementing safer road systems that protect all road users. The Safe System Approach, adopted by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), provides a strategy to reach Vision Zero. This is a shift from a conventional approach because it focuses on both human mistakes AND human vulnerability to design a system with many redundancies in place to protect everyone.
